The CAE interoperability Forum (CAE-IF) is a joint testing effort between AFNeT, PDES, Inc. and prostep ivip. The objective of the CAE-IF is to accelerate the development of solutions for CAE interoperability (data exchange, visualization, long term archiving and retrieval) based on the ISO STEP AP209 edition 2 standard “Multidisciplinary Analysis and Design”.
 

CAE interoperability needs for engineering using STEP AP209

The CAE-IF primarily focusses on Static Linear Structural Analysis and is composed of:

  • the User Group (UG)
  • the Implementor Group (IG)

The role of the UG is to define use cases and test cases and to assign priorities; for now the LOTAR EAS Working Group serves as the CAE-IF UG.
The IG organizes periodic tests (tests rounds) based on user needs defined functionalities. These solutions rely on STEP translators that can manage input and output data from CAE analysis as well as process data and metadata to capture the context in which this data was created (fig 1.). The IG offers a unique opportunity to CAE vendors to use the tests rounds as a sandbox in which they can evaluate and check new modules in their translators within a fully confidential framework.
 
The CAE-IF is part of the global MBx-IF initiative whose scope covers the overall Model Based interoperability. The CAE-IF produces technical documents such as “recommended practices” and “handbooks” to support the correct implementation of STEP AP209 in software tools. The final goal of the CAE-IF initiative is to increase user confidence when using ISO STEP AP209 ed2 interfaces.
